CORRELATION OF C-REACTIVE PROTEIN TO ALVARADO SCORE AND CT SCAN IN DIAGNOSING ACUTE APPENDICITIS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Our is a prospective observational study which was conducted at CMRI hospital, Kolkata and Tata motors hospital, Jamshedpur for a period of 2 years from September 2019 to August 2021. The sample size was calculated as 76 and the inclusion and exclusion criteria were as follows:
Inclusion criteria:
- All patients above the age of 18 years and clinical suspicion of an Acute Attack of Appendicitis.
- Patient with whole abdominal CECT as part of protocol at CMRI Hospitals and Tata Motors H
Exclusion criteria:
- Immunocompromised patients.
- Patients on steroids or immunosuppressant
- Patients with other infective or inflammatory
conditions in the body
- Pregnant patients.
- Patients with renal compromise.
Acute Appendicitis was diagnosed by clinical, laboratory and radiological findings, following which their Alvarado score was calculated. Once diagnosis is confirmed with CT scan, the findings were correlated with CRP values and Alvarado Score.
From our study we concluded that a positive correlations was found between CRP and Alvarado Score , CT scan findings and Alvarado score, and between CRP and CT scan findings in favour of appendicitis which was statistically significant.
We concluded that using Alvarado score and CRP levels in combination with or without CT scan, helps us to confirm or rule out acute appendicitis safely.
